MOTOR-DRIVEN AIR COMPRESSORSAnother addition to the ecpiipment that has greatly increasedthe capacity of the shops is the introduction of pneumatic tools, power for which is furnished by three portable air compressorsof the Christensen type, driven by electric motors. One ofthese equipments was first installed in the mill, where atemporary connection for the motor driving the compressor hadbeen made with the power circuit from which current is takenfor the motors operating saws, planers and other woodworkingmachinery. These outfits are moved from point to point aboutthe shops wherever compressed air is required. They have. ENCLOSED MOTOR AND GOVERNOR ON AIR COMPRESSOR been found very convenient and economical, as they can be usedfor heavy work which could not be brought to the immediatevicinity of the main power plant, as in the example cited, wherethe mill is half a mile from the generating plant, and thecost of transmitting compressed air such a distance for thiswork would be prohibitive. Moreover, the multiplicity ofcompressor plants about an establishment of this size, shouldequipments be installed permanently in all departments wherepneumatic tools could be used to advantage, would increase thecost of apparatus beyond all reasonable limit, especially as therewould be only occasional demands for compressed air and theoutfit would not be operating under advantageous conditions. The compressors are shown in detail in the two views of themachines themselves which are here presented. Each equip-ment consists of one Christensen type H, size D-4, inter-mittent running compre
