Schistosoma Haematobium (Distomum Haema-tobium, Bilhar^ia).—The male and female parasites occurin the branches of the portal system, especially in the veinsof the bladder and rectum, and in the liver. The ova escapefrom the blood-vessels into the bladder and occasion violentinflammation. The process may extend to the kidneys. Theova also infect the rectum, causing a sort of dysentery, andmay involve even the appendix. The ova, with their pointed 406 PATHOLOGICAL TECHNIQUE. spines, are characteristic, and may be found by microscopicalexamination in the urine and feces. The spines are usuallysituated at one end, but may occur anywhere in the Fig. 137.—Schistosoma haematobium. Ovum from fasces showing pointedspine on one side ; X 300 (photo, by L. S. Brown).
