Merida (08°36'N, 71 °08'W). With an average altitude of 1,641 m, the capital of the same-named state is located on a plateau in the upper Rio Chama valley. Due to the topographic affinities the climate is subtropical. Merida is surrounded by the highest Andean peaks in Venezuela, , to the east by the ridges of Pico Bolivar (0833'N, 71°03'W). This mountain range, particularly the surrounding paramo zone, has been made accessible by the world's longest and highest cable car, the so-called Teleferico, that stops at four different stations: La Montana (2,500 m), La Aguada (3,450 m), Loma Redonda (4,045 m) and Pico Espejo (4,765 m). During two field excursions (27, 31 August 2001; AAW), observations were made in the cloud forest, subpdramo dxAparamo zone between 2,500 and 4,200 m. LaMwcwy(08°36'N, 71 03'W). Located in the Sierra Nevada National Park, 15 km east of Merida. Elevation ranges between 2,200 and 2,700 m, and mean annual temperatures vary between 10 and 18 C (Ataroff & Rada 2000). Rainfall is variable from 1,700-3,500 mm annually, with peaks between April and May and between October and November (Ataroff & Rada 2000). Categorized as a cloud forest ecosystem, the vegetational structure of the area is complex, with an irregular canopy at 20-30 m supporting a high diversity of epiphytes. Since 1999, the "La Mucuy" Bird Observatory has been operating a
