Sambar is supposedly a forest deer and although largely nocturnal it can be observed quite easily almost all through the day Stags may be very large and in fact very favoured prey of the tiger Tey are very heavily built with great three tined antlers and a shaggy mare around the neck Females and young are dark brownish grey in colour while stags may be dark orangish brown almost dirty grey brown black depending upon the particular time of the year Single stags are often seen and herds when they occur consist of only a few animsls the most common groupings are of one hind and one fawn or of one hind one yearling and one fawn
