Each of the four coils consists of three re- turns, except the one (in the exposed wall, which has four pipes. As we un- derstand it, the chanjfcs pro])osed will consist of arranging the coils liorizon- tally (all of the ])i]ies side by side at the same level) insteail of in vertical coils, as at ])resent. There is little to be gained by tliis change and, in fact, ver- tical coils for the side walls would be preferable, tliese being less in the way. Another change is in taking out the four 2-inch returns and substituting one main 4-inch flow overhe;id in the middle of tlie house, with .'i-inch ]ii])es to conneilies, aiul particularly the flows, as much as ])OssiljJe. To heat the house described to ol) degree's in zero weather will re(juire over ],r)0() square feet of radiation aiul this is rather more than can be handled to advantage by a 4-incli main. We should ]irefer to use five L"-j-iiich flow pipes and connect the flows at the farther end of the house with five coils, each containing fixe 2 inch pipes. It is noteil that the owner of the house lives in San Francisco. If the house is located near that city, there would be no iiecessityfor planning radia, tion for zero weather, as is stated on the sketch, and in that case it is ])robal)le that four 2i/i-inch flow pil>es, connected with four coils, each con- taining three 2-inch returns, would be aiiii)le. The flows as well as the I'eturns should run downhill. One reason for using the five 2i/;-iiicli instead of one 4-inch l)ipe for the flows is that the water in small pipes will cool faster than in a large one and this will tend to improve the circulation. In case the flow j)ipes run u])hill, large i)i])es will be better than small ones. PIPE and FLUES A LL SIZES of secon
