Tertiary volcanic landscape, illustration. Lava fields and volcanoes occur where new land is being formed and destroyed, usually at tectonic plate boundaries. Over the long periods of geologic time, this leads to changes in the position and shapes of the continents, and also affects the climate, ecology and evolution of life. The Tertiary Period spans the time period from 65 million to million years ago. This scene dates from around 60 million years ago in what is now Scotland when the Atlantic Ocean was widening. Monkey puzzle trees (Araucaria araucana) were common. The volcano here is what will later become the eroded mountain of Ben More.
