Mexico, its ancient and modern civilisation, history and political conditions, topography and natural resources, industries and general development; . liths or Columns, the Catholic group, and the Arroyo group. Like some of the pyramidsthroughout Mexico, these are oriented, in this casethe variation being but a few degrees from the cardinalpoints of the compass. The remarkable Hall of theMonoliths is a building some 125 feet long by 25 feetwide, with a row of great stone columns running downthe centre. These columns are cut from a single pieceof trachyte, 15 feet in height, and 3 feet in diameterat the base, tapering somewhat upwards, but of almostcylindrical form, without pedestal or capital. Whilstthese columns are intact, the roof, which was doubtlesssupported on beams resting on the column, is weight of these monoliths is calculated at five or sixtons, and they were cut from quarries in the trachyterock of the mountains some five miles away, and morethan 1,000 feet above the site of Mitla. In this quarryhalf-cut blocks for columns and lintels are still inplace. Food for thought, even for the modern engineer,is this
