Those in touch with conditions declare that there will be another shortage of coal during the fall and winter, more serious, even, than the one recently experienced. Prices, too, will continue at the present high level, with more than an even chance of increasing materially when the demand becomes greater in the late summer and the months following. Freight Raise Probable, Too. The price of Pocahontas coal, used in the middle west by growers whose ranges are within the smoke regulation limits of cities, is $ to $4 per ton at the mine. Although this price is nearly three times that of the same date last year, the supply is not equal to the demand, declare the dealers. The cost of other kinds of bituminous coal also has advanced, the increase being 100 per cent or more. These prices, of course, are exclusive of the freight charges, which are likely to be from 10 to 20 cents a ton greater, as the rail- roads have asked au- thority from the Inter- state Commerce Com- mission to advance their rates and are con- fident the request will be granted. The entry of the United States into the war has added another drain on the supply of Pocahontas coal. Coal- burning ships of the navy use Pocahontas because it is smokeless and the fields are read- ily accessible to Atlan- tic seaports. The activ- ity of the naval vessels, it is estimated, will in-
