Yellow-white sun setting grey clouds horizon behind a tall branch rising from the end of a tree trunk lying on a flat, wide, wet low tide sand beach expanse, some distance out from the coastline at Fairhaven, Lytham St Annes, Lancashire. The tidal range on the beach varies . A 7 metre high tide covers only a small section of beach, allowing large areas to dry out and blow in the wind. A 10 metre high tide, in contrast, will flood the beach and reach the coastline (right of shot), leaving the beach wet at low tide. Tree remains, derived from bank erosion in the upper reaches of the River Ribble, are occasionally washed onto the beach by the high tide. This trunk stayed for a few weeks before being washed away. Others, in contrast, may be washed nearer and nearer the coastline, where they may be cut up and removed.
