C15th (1400-30) wall painting opposite the S door of Llanynys church, Denbighshire, Wales, UK, showing St Christopher carrying the Infant Jesus.

C15th (1400-30) wall painting opposite the S door of Llanynys church, Denbighshire, Wales, UK, showing St Christopher carrying the Infant Jesus. Uncovered in 1967, it shows the Canaanite giant & martyr Christopher (Christ-bearer) with a child on his shoulders, flowering staff in hand, crossing a dangerous river. Legend: when the task proves almost impossible, the child reveals he is Jesus Christ & that Christopher has carried the weight of the world. Patron saint of travellers, invoked against water, tempest, plague & sudden death, his image was placed on the N wall to be seen by all entering a church: it was believed that those who saw an image of the saint would not die that day.
