Battle of Lepanto. Map showing the fleets of ships that took part in the Battle of Lepanto in the Gulf of Corinth on 7 October 1571. This Mediterranean naval battle was between the Holy League (left, a coalition of Spain and other Catholic European countries) and the Ottoman Empire (right). Each side had over 200 ships. In five hours of fighting, over 25,000 were killed, wounded or captured, and large numbers of Ottoman ships captured or sunk. The decisive victory by the Holy League helped prevent the expansion of the Ottoman Empire. This map and description of the battle is by Horatio de Marii Tigrino. It was published in Rome in 1572 by Michele Tramezzino.
