The Rallarvegen track in autumn at Nygard, near Haugastøl in Buskerud, Norway

The Rallarvegen was built in 1902-04 in connection with the construction of the Oslo to Bergen railway across the Hardangervidda plateau; it is named after the "rallar" or navvies who worked on the project, Rallarvegen meaning The Navvies Road in English. It runs west, from Haugastøl in the east to Myrdal station in the neighbouring municipality of Aurland, from where one branch continues further west to the Mjølfjell Hostel in Raundalen (and ultimately Voss, now by public road), and the other north down Flåmsdalen to Flåm on the shore of Aurlandsfjorden, the two branches providing some 80 kilometres of unpaved and largely untrafficked road which is now a popular cycle and walking route.
