(Seo+ion on BB, ) DETAILS OF AUTOMATICALLY OPERATED TKACK CLEANER 660 ELECTRIC RAILWAY JOURNAL [Vol. XLVII, No. 14 New Form of Flow Meter A meter designed for the measurement of the flowof steam, water and gases in pipes has recently beenplaced on the market by the Bailey Meter Company,Boston, Mass., and it contains a number of valuablefeatures that are distinctly novel. The operation de-pends upon the measurement (by a mercury float-gage) of the difference in pres-I sure on the two sides of. an orifice plate that isintroduced into the pipeline containing the fluidthat is to be measured, the orifice being in theform of a segment of acircle. The pressure lossthus caused is nevermore than about 1 lb.,less than the loss causedby an ordinary elbow, globe valve or non-re-turn valve with present-day velocities. The in-tegration of the pressuredifferences is effected bya clock-driven disk anda follower that is con-nected to the float-gage. The orifice plate ismade of 1/32-in. Monelmetal, and is corrugatednear its outer edge sothat it can be introducedbetween a pair of flang-es, forming its owngasket without any otherpacking. Test plates have been taken outnew form of flow meter f rom high velocity steam lines after more thanone years constant service, and it is said that they showabsolutely no wear, the square edges being just as sharpas when they were put in. Two pipes connect the meter to the steam main, onebeing placed on either side of the orifice, and these arekept full of con
