In 1981 he had his first leg amputated. Ten years later his second one. He was captain of the cleaning-streets gang for the government. Actually he receives an allowance because of it. According to a research note from IDRI, the newly developed test kit provides a result in less than 10 minutes and is far simpler than the current diagnostic method. The current method involves cutting open nodules, often in the earlobe, and looking for the bacteria under a microscope. The new method involves taking a small blood sample from a person. The blood is transferred onto a plastic strip and a solution is added. Leprosy is indicated by a color change. Malcolm Duthie, Senior Scientist at IDRI is quoted by PR News as saying: “The test requires just a single drop of blood, mixed with a developing reagent. From there, a line develops and it's somewhat like a pregnancy test: the appearance of two lines indicates the test is positive and the person has leprosy.” To develop the test kit, the researchers required multiple samples of the causative agent, the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. For this, The Nation reports, they took samples from armadillos, an animal that is a carrier of the bacterium. The researchers have developed the test in conjunction with the Brazilian health authorities. From this partnership, a Brazilian diagnostics company called OrangeLife, will manufacture the test kit. The kit will be sold at $1 or less.
