An extensive pall of acrid smoke now extends from Manchester to as far as the west coast, with house owners advised to keep windows shut. Firefighters tackling the blaze close to a major TV transmitter expect it will take days to either extinguish or to burn out. The fire, which started at Winter Hill on Thursday, is smouldering across a sq miles (5 sq km) area. A 22-year-old man, from Bolton, was arrested on Friday on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. The fire has "intensified" following increased winds during the afternoon, Lancashire fire service said.
