The discrepancy of air between intakeand outcast is caused by the air leaking into the old workings of the Black Diamondmine, which adjoins this mine and is abandoned. The mine was well ventilatedand the air distributed in compliance with the law. The entry connecting with theescape shaft was in poor condition on account of falls of rock. I ordered it cleanedup and maintained in good order. The fan was running 53 revolutions per minute. I measured 28,500 cubicfeet of air entering the mine per minute and measured 30,290 cubic feet of air perminute returning. The distribution of the air was in compliance with the law. March jn, 1897.—Inspected the workings of tho mine and took air the fan running 50 revolutions per minute. I measured 26,000 cubic feet ofair entering the mine per minute and 27,300 cubic feet of air returning through thereturn air course. The mine was in good working order. May .?, 1897. — Upon inspection I found the mine to be in fair working timbers in No. 3 entry, at the parting, were broken.
