Death and the Lansquenet. 16th-century woodcut showing a soldier (right) standing and leaning upon his weapon, while Death (left) holds up an hourglass before him. Artwork dated 1510, by German artist Albrecht Durer (1471-1528). A lansquenet (also known as a landsknecht) was a type of mercenary soldier.
