Here you will first .see what are calledthe bottom lands of Nebraska. They are asrich as any lands on this Continent, as the re-markable crops raised thereon fully this .station you turn nearly due west, and. over the lower circle of what is called the OX-lx)W. Joftifiou,— miles from Omaha; eleva-tion JlJ feet, is the next station, and is a thriv-ing little town (pronounced Pa-pil-yo). It derivesits name from the creek on whose banks it is situ-ated. Tliis creek was named by Lewis and Clarkin their expedition U) Oregon, in 184, and isderived from a Latin word which means butter-fly. The main branch was crossed a little westof(JilnK)re. Itemji-ties into the Mis-soutone mile north ofthe Platte River. Itis rejiorted that theearly explorersnamed, saw an im-mense number ofbutterflies in themuddy and w etplaces near itsmouth, and hencethe name. Thesegentlemen exploredthis stream to , near the Elk-horn River. Thetown was laid outin the fall of 1869by Dr. Readle, andis the permanentcounty-seat of Sar-py County. It hasa fine brick ^ and a brickschool-house, hotels,flouring mills and agrain ware-house; islocated as are allthe towns on
