Sustainable housing built using recycled & environmentally friendly materials, and incorporating sustainable energy for heating. The Shettleston estate, Glasgow, Scotland, is made up of 16 dwellings built above a disused coal mine that has been flooded. This provides geothermally heated water that is used to heat all the houses. Additionally, passive solar panels (upper right) heat water and solar ventilation (situated beneath the roofs' eaves), circulate warmed air throughout the houses. The building materials used were either recycled or those that caused the least impact on the environment, such as recycled newsprint used as cavity wall insulation.
