A terrace west of the Telesterion in Eleusis, Greece. Artist: Samuel Magal

A terrace west of the Telesterion in Eleusis, Greece. The central feature of the sanctuary at Eleusis is the Telesterion. The Solonic Telesterion was erected about 600 BC on the site of a small Mycenaean temple of the 14th century BC, with an Anaktoron (holy of holies) which remained until Roman times the central element in the structure. Remains of these earlier buildings were found near the east corner of the Telesterion. Ancient Eleusis lies within the present-day industrial town of Elevsis (Elefsina) in Greece.
