View N showing the hypocaust system (underfloor heating) in the dining room of the commandant's house at Housesteads Roman fort, Hadrian's Wall, Northumberland, England, UK. A flagged floor raised on a variety of pillars, some of them re-used, was heated by hot air coming from a furnace via a flue in the W wall (L); there were also heated flues in the plastered walls. The commanding officer or prefect's house (praetorium) was situated near the S gate of the fort & entered from the main N-S street (via principalis). Housesteads is the most complete example of a Roman fort to be seen in Britain, one of the original 12 (eventually 16) permanent forts on Hadrian's Wall it was built around AD124. It housed 1,000 infantry auxiliaries from a unit originally raised in eastern Belgium & was later reinforced by cavalry. There was an extensive civil settlement S of the 5-acre fort.
