In the battles around Petersburg and in the pursuit, Lee lost over tenthousand men killed and wounded, and twenty thousand men in prisonersand deserters, including those taken in battle, and those picked up inpursuit; embracing all arms of the service—teamsters, hospital force, andeverything—from sixteen to eighteen thousand men were surrendered byLee. As only fifteen thousand muskets and about thirty pieces of artil-lery were surrendered, the available fighting force could hardly haveexceeded fifteen or twenty thousand men. Our total captures of artilleryduring the battles and pursuit, and at the surrender, amounted toabout one hundred and seventy guns. Three or four hundred wagonswere handed over. In the terms of surrender, the officers gave their own paroles, andeach ofiicer gave his parole for the men within his command. The fol-lowing is the
