Cornish Pilot Gig Racing annual race held at Looe ,Cornwall, in July every year .Both male and female teams compete
Since the 1980s, gigs have been used for racing each other and the competition is fierce. There are over 25 clubs in Cornwall, Devon & the Isles of Scilly and over 50 gigs. Competitions are held most Saturdays and some Sundays from May to September, with major competitions in the Isles of Scilly at the beginning of May and in Newquay at the beginning of September. By 2000 there were gig clubs in England, France, Holland, Australia, Ireland, and several in the USA. History of gigs "The life of a the pilot was dog eat dog existence, the first pilot to get to a ship got the job, inevitably when more than one pilot gig spotted a potential job, a race would ensue in order to get the piloting contract."
