Comrade Peter Roach was born inIreland and came to this country when achild. Filled with martial ardor, he ranaway from home, and being a well-de-veloped boy enlisted in the 25th NewYork Infantry, but his father obtainedhis discharge on proving that he wasunder age. Two weeks later, in companywith three other boys, who all worked inthe same shop, he ran away to Hartford,Conn., and enlisted in the First Connecticut Light Battery. Hisfather did not find him, and so the young soldier went to the front andparticipated in the closing scenes of the great war. His father wasan Irish patriot and was a distinguished member of the AncientOrder of Hibernians; his grandfather served in the English armyand retired with a pension.
