CAMDEN, MAINE. YACHTS AND YACHTING 117 PORTLAND YACHT CLUB. The first Portland yacht of which there was a record is the venerableLaurel, built in 1820. She was considered a fast sailer and was for manyyears a favorite boat for picnic parties to the different Islands of Casco Bay. Before the days of railroads, electric cars, or automobiles, she carried pas-sengers to the Commencement at Bowdoin, and she appeared prominently inthe early paintings of Diamond FLEET OF PORTLAND YACHT CLUB. When ov/ned by Judge Goddard, she took part in the club cruises and re-gattas. She is now enjoying a green old age, but has not taken active part inthe regattas or cruises for some years. Other yachts were the Quakeress and later the Choctaw and the Amer-ican. The latter, although less than thirty feet long, carried a jib-boom andmartingale. In 1866 there were owned in Portland the schooner Laurel, Nettle andSparkle; sloops Ray, Spy, Whisper and others, and a cruise was ar-ranged. Capt. Abiel N. Smith, of the Ray, was acting Commodore, and Capt. W^illard, of the Nettle was acting Vice-Commodore. The cruise lasted threedays, and was so successful that it was determined to organize a club, and thenext vear on April 26th, 1869, 42 years ago, the Portland Yacht Club was formed.
