Infective endocarditis

Infective endocarditis, gross specimen. Infective endocarditis is inflammation of the endocardium (innermost layer of the heart). It usually involves infection of the valve surfaces resulting in the formation of granular or polypoid lesions on valve leaflets and the chordae tendinae. The lesions are composed of fibrin, platelets, inflammatory infiltrate and bacterial colonies. This image shows involvement of the tricuspid valve in an intravenous drug user. There are irregular, granular lesions on the contact margin of valve leaflets.
