Surgical wounds infected with MRSA. Leg of a 19-year-old woman infected with MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) bacteria, after surgery to fix a trimalleolar fracture of her ankle. The bars are used to hold the bones in place to allow them to heal in the correct position. MRSA infection can lead to boils, pustules and abscesses (orange areas around wounds), and in some cases the potentially fatal toxic shock syndrome (TSS). Some strains of MRSA can still be treated with certain drugs, but others have developed wide-ranging antibiotic resistance. The spread of MRSA can be prevented by health workers washing their hands between patients and before procedures.
