Testate amoebae and desmid. Darkfield illuminated polarised light micrograph of two Arcella sp. testate (shelled) amoebae (spheres), and the filamentous desmid Desmidium swartzii (bottom). Arcella species are found in freshwater ponds and puddles. Their circular shells are formed from the polysaccharide chitin. Desmids are a common group of freshwater single-celled green algae that have intricate cell walls. Magnification: x200 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
