Greece, Athens Museum. The head of Poseidon salvaged from the sea off Cape Artemision in 1928. A brother of Zeus he was awarded the sea while his brother had the kingdom under the earth. Poseidon had many marriages in Greek mythology. The first he fell in love with Theophane, then with Halia, Hekate, then came a dalliance with Aphrodite for which he was driven mad and slept with his own Mother (Rhea). Demeter came next and begat him the famous steed Arion, another name for Demeter was Aphrodite, but there were many Nereids, naiads, and nymps inbetween.
