Large shipmentsof grain are made to Europe, and tobacco, cotton, petroleum, bacon, butter, cheese,and lard, are also exported. Baltimore is the chief point for working the rich copper-ores of Lake Superior, and produces nearly 4,000 tons of refined copper yearly ; the 36 HAND-BOOK OF AMERICAN CITIES. smelting-works are in Canton, and employ 1,000 men. There are also iron-works,rolling-mills, nail-factories, locomotive-works, cotton-factories, and other industrial. Baltimore. establishments (2,261 in all). The canning of oysters, fruits, and vegetables, is es-timated to reach tlie annual value of $5,000,000 ; and 500,000 hides are annuallymade into leather and sent to New England. Hotels, Restiinrants, .ind Clubs.—The GarrolUon House, cor. Baltimore and LightSts., is a new and handsome liotel ($4 a day). Barnums Hotel, cor. Calvert andFayette Sts., is the largest in the city ($4 a day). The Eutaic House^ cor. Baltimoreand Eutaw Sts., is a long-established house recently refitted ($ a day). The ^ on Monument Square, has accommodations for 300 guests; and the MalthyHouse ($3 a day), in Pratt St. near Light, and the Howard House ($2 a day), Howard St. near Baltimore, are good houses. The Mount Vernon Hotel^ in Monu-ment St. near Mount Vernon Place, is a small but elegant house on the Europeanplan. Gmfs^ on Monument Square, is also on the European plan, and has a goodrestaurant attached
