They succeed best in a warm, moist, rich, loamy soil. Continue planting at intervals for a succession. The Cucumbers should be gathered when large enough for use, whether required or not; if left to ripen on the vines, plants stop bearing. For pickles, plant them from June until the middle of July. The yellow striped cucumber beetle is the most serious insect enemy of the crop. Bordeaux Arsenate of Lead Mixture is by far the best remedy yet discovered. Dilute it with water, 3 ounces to the gallon, and spray it on the vines. Dusting the vines with Slug Shot also constitutes a simple but effective remedy.
