Protozoan spore formation. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Encephalitozoon intestinalis spores (blue) in intestinal cells. This microsporidia invades the eyes as well as epithelial cells of the human intestines, usually in immuno-compromised patients. It may cause severe diarrhoea and weight loss. The parasite is thought to be ingested in contaminated food and water. Mature spores are released from the host cell and are expelled from the body in the faeces. Magnification: unknown.
