Gainsborough's Welsh actress Sarah Siddons, considered the best-known 18th-century tragedienne, was in her 29th year here.
Thomas Gainsborough (died 1788) was an English portrait painter and landscape artist. He was a founding member of England's Royal Academy of the Arts. Among his best known works are The Blue Boy, Portrait of Mrs. Graham, The Painter's Daughters, and Cottage Girl with Dog and Pitcher. This painting, titled Mrs. Siddons, was housed in the National Gallery in is now housed in the Huntington Library in California. This painting was done in 1784. It represents the celebrated Welsh actress (1755-1831) in her 29th year. Sarah Siddons was considered the best-known 18th-century tragedienne. Her best known role was that of Lady Macbeth in Shakespeare's play Macbeth.
