The Double-crested Cormorant, a pairof which is shown in our illustrationwith their nest and eggs, is the commonCormorant of the eastern and middleUnited States. In that region, however,it is rarely seen excepting during its mi-grations, or as a winter visitant in thesouthern states as far north as southernIllinois and Virginia. In exceptional sea-sons it has, however, been known to passthe winter as far north as the Bay ofFundy. It nests from the states of Da-kota and Minnesota and the region ofthe Great Lakes northward. Thehabitsofthe Double-crested speciesare similar to those of the other Cormo-rants. Fish form its principle article offood. These it obtains by diving andpursuing them under water.
