This latter article does notdeal with the particular species in question, but with other closely alliedspecies. Rainbow Trout. This introduced species appears to be growing in favor in manv portionsof New York. A very great difficulty in stocking streams with rainbow. RAINBOW TROUT trout arose from its migrator} habits. But in localities furnishing suitableconditions as to the size of the lake and other essentials it appears to givegood satisfaction. Some years ago the South Side Sportsmens Club ofLong Island thought the rainbow unworthy of its attention and desiredto get rid of its entire stock, but now the members have splendid fishingin the brackish water of Great river, and the trout run up into the streamto spawn in fresh water, usually beginning in January. Other Long Islandclubs are restocking their waters with rainbow trout. One excellent reasonfor this return to the rainbow is its immunity from the ulcer disease whichaffects brown trout so seriously on Long Island and elsewhere. It is practically useless to collect eggs from old stock fish. This hasproved to be the case at three of the trout stations.
