Editorial use only. This image may not be used to state or imply endorsement by CERN of any product, activity or service The first World Wide Web server. In December 1990, the world's first World Wide Web (WWW or Web) server ran on this NeXT computer at CERN, the European centre for particle physics near Geneva. It was set up by Tim Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau. In the previous months Berners-Lee, then a computer specialist at CERN, had developed the first Web browser and editor. His invention, originally made in order to improve data communication between particle physicists, made the World Wide Web possible.
