Kalo slot castle, Aarchus region, Denmark
Kalo Slotsruin was during the Middle Ages a great vassal seat with power over Mols and Djursland. The present is only the ruins of the great castle back. The first farm building is completely gone and the other is now Kalø Manor castle ruin. King Erik Menved defeated the Jutland peasant revolt in 1313 and subsequently built four forts in Jutland, including Kalo Castle Ruin in the inner bay in Aarhus Bay. The great fortress was subjected to great changes until Kalo in 1343 came under King Valdemar Atterdag, which broadened the castle to the extent that can be experienced today. Later the castle was mortgaged to Aarhus bishop who took the fortress in possession until Queen Margrethe back in 1407 cashed it. In the following 250 years was Kalo a solid stronghold of royal power. Royal vassals led Kalo Len covering the entire Jutland until 1660 when the old County was abolished. In peacetime, was Kalo primarily an estate with extensive landholdings, which were cared for from the castle and its associated farm buildings. Kalo Castle was also used as a prison. During the 1600 year had Kalo castle lost its defensive significance and fortifications and the buildings fell into disrepair. Christian V in 1672 gave Kalo Slot for Ulrik Frederik Gyldenløve who let the buildings demolished. Most building materials were shipped to Copenhagen and used for construction of the current Charlottenborg. ()
