REXROAT, James M., a retired farmer re-siding in Macomb, 111., and justly regardedas one of the most worthy and substantial cit-izens of the place, was born in southeasternKentucky, in January, 1828, and received hiseducation in the subscription schools. He isa son of Peter and Mournen (Hopper) Rexroat,the former a native of Pennsylvania, and thelatter of Kentucky. Adam Rexroat. the pa-ternal grandfather, was born in Germany, and. J^JfsZkjtJM^u^^^.^ HISTORY OF McDOXOUGH COUXTY. 989 the grandfather on the maternal side, WilliamHopper, was a native of South Carolina. is the oldest of six children born tohis parents. At the age of nineteen years hecame to Morgan County, 111., where he wasemployed for two years at farming, by themonth. He then rented a farm in Iowa forthree years. In 1S53 he came to ScotlandTownship, McDonough County, and bought 160acres of land, which he improved. Ihere hewas engaged in farming and stock-raising until1885, when he moved to Macomb and built afine residence, where he lives in comfortableretirement. In 1873 Mr. Rexroat went toFrance, to secure blooded stallions for breedingpurposes on his farm, and in 1881 and 1882visited France and England for the same pur-pose. He became widely noted as a breeder offine horses, dealing in Norman, English andClyde stock. He started in this line in 1870,under the firm name of Rexroat, Moore &Westfa
