Broken arm X-ray. Image 1 of 2. X-ray of a severely damaged arm. The elbow (lower centre) is fragmented and the bone of the upper arm (humerus, upper centre) is missing a large segment above the elbow. X-ray images are created by passing electromagnetic X-ray waves through the body and onto film. X-rays penetrate soft tissue but are absorbed by bone. This injury was treated with a bioceramic bone implant. See image M330/880.
