APPENDIX. The improvements made in printing pressessince the discovery of the art have been verygreat. The Adams bed and platten press, onwhich this book is printed, is a noble invention—some idea of it may be gathered from the Fron-tispiece. Newspapers are for the most partprinted on a cylinder press, of which the follow-ing is a APPENDIX. 189 These presses are worked by steam-power. Anengraving of the engine that drives the pressesin our Publishing House may be seen on thepreceding page. These presses are widely removed from thehand press, which is, however, still in use forsmall jobs. The old-fashioned hand press isrepresented in the following engraving.
