APPENDIX. The improvements made in printing pressessince the discovery of the art have been verygreat. The Adams bed and platten press, onwhich this book is printed, is a noble invention—some idea of it may be gathered from the Fron-tispiece. Newspapers are for the most partprinted on a cylinder press, of which the follow-ing is a APPENDIX. 189 These presses are worked by steam-power. Anengraving of the engine that drives the pressesin our Publishing House may be seen on thepreceding page.
