Surgical instruments for use on bones, historical anatomical artwork. This 19th century textbook illustration shows different instruments used to perform surgery on bones. The large knives and saws (lower) were used for cutting through bone during amputation, the smaller knives and scalpels for cutting softer tissues. At the top can be seen several mechanical saws, including a chainsaw, for cutting bone, and various shears, scissors and forceps. This illustration is taken from the 19th century French textbook The Atlas of Human Anatomy and Surgery by J. M. Bourgery and N. H. Jacob.
