Lava flowing into the ocean near Kalapana, Big Island, Hawaii, USA. The lava flows from Kilauea through underground lava tubes into the ocean, sending spectacular plumes of steam into the air. At the end of the State Highway 130, allowed motorists to travel through Kalapana and along the Chain of Craters Road to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. The road and many homes were destroyed by lava after Kilauea erupted in 1983. Hawai`i County opened a lava viewing area with paved access road over the pahoehoe lava. The viewing area is open from 5pm to 8pm and visitors can view the lava entry point from safe distance. Visitors would need to hike a mile or so on pahoehoe lava from the parking area.
