The earliest Anglo-Saxon translations were made inthe seventh century by Caedmon of Whitby, who embodiedthe most prominent events of Bible history in his Anglo-Saxonpoetry, and by Bede the Venerable, who translated the LordsPrayer and the Gospel of John. A translation of the fourGospels made in the ninth century by priests of Harewoodand called The Rush-worth Gloss, is in the Bodleian Libraryat Oxford. Alfred the Great translated the Ten Command-ments, the Psalms and some portions of Exodus and otherbooks. Aelfric, Archbishop of Canterbury, translated a con-siderable portion of the historical books. In the twelfthcentury a monk named Orm, or Ormin, wrote a paraphraseof the Gospels and Acts in English verse. This is known asthe Ormulum. (All these versions were made from the Vul-gate.) 4.
