Essex is an ancient county in the east of England lying on the doorstep to London, its county town being Chelmsford. The county is rural with many small towns, villages and hamlets largely built with traditional materials of timber and brick with clay tiled or thatched roofs and enjoys a mild climate, the driest in the British Isles. Its 50 mile coastline in the east lies on the North Sea and, as the crow flies, stretches from the River Thames in the south, at the border with Greater London, to the River Stour and Harwich in the north on the border with Suffolk.
