The work is entirely written in Latin, which renders it still morevaluable, as well as indespensable to all who desire to possess beau-tiful figures united with correct structural details of rare andinteresting genera. The two forthcoming numbers will be chieflydevoted to the Lamellicorn beetles, including a figure of the maleof Mr. Cumings new Eucheirus (E. quadrilineatus, Waterh.) Thegenera Fulgora and Pyrops will also be illustrated in them. 3 :i v , -- - :- ^ \ ■ ■ v, ^:3- •- ■ ;. 33 PLATE IX. DESCRIPTION OF A NEW GENUS OF MANTIDEOUS ORTHOPTERA. It is amongst the Orthoptera that we find some, of the moststriking and ugly-formed insects; this is especially the case withmany of the soothsayer or praying mantides ; such as M. strumaria,Linn., M. cancellata, Fabr., etc.; in which we find the prothoraxdeveloped on each side into a very broad thin membrane of variableform, resembling a leaf. These species, except in respect to thisprothoracic membrane, agree in general character with the genuinespecies of the restricted genus Mantis; and consequently we findthat Professor Burmeister has rejected the generic name of Chsera-dodis, which M. Serville had proposed for them, using it only as asectional or subgeneric name, and giving the subgeneric names ofRhombodera and Craurusa to other allied analogous species in the same family are distinguished by having asmall membranous appe
