It lives near the coast of central Cali-fornia. Diameter one inch. Var. ramentosa, Gld. The surface of the shellis cut up into innumerable checks, which are shownby a lens to consist of little oblong grains, arranged))arallel to the lines of growth. The epidermis ofthe young ones is studded with little bristles. Dia-meter about three-fourths of an inch. This form isfound in Alameda County, Cal., and in adjacentregions. Var. diahloensis, J. G. Cooper, has a flattenedshell, umbilicated and thin, with regular mallea-tions arranged in revolving series, like dentscaused by the blows of a small hammer. Diameterrather less than an inch.
