Manchester Friday 1st February, 2013. An arrested female protester and campaigner against tree felling in Alexandra Park in Greater Manchester. Tree felling was interrupted by several campaigners who staged a peaceful protest. Trees are being cut in Alexandra Park, Whalley Range, as part of the city council's £ project to return it to the way it looked in Victorian times.

The park was developed by the Manchester Corporation long before the area was incorporated into the city. Work started in late 2012 will lead to major improvements in the park. In this process 30 ha of the park (currently overgrown by over 400 mature ash trees) will be replanned. The newly created terrain will be used for cricket grounds, tennis courts, and sight lines through the park. The planned re-structuring of the park has raised critical voices in the local neighbourhood and in environmental circles and has been opposed with a petition and protest events. The council intends to fell 280 trees as part of a £ project to return the park to the way it is supposed to have looked in Victorian times.
