Raising birds has been a popular pastime amongst Chinese males for centuries. Groups of elderly men can often be found gathered together in parks listening to their birds singing in their cages. The activity is largely a social one as well as the sound of the birds' singing being a source of enjoyment and relaxation for their owners.
