European otter (Lutra lutra), standing in a field. European otters are found in parts of Asia and Africa as well as across Europe. They inhabit freshwater and feed on birds, insects, frogs, crustaceans and small mammals. They hunt mostly at night and spend the day in their 'holt,' a burrow in the riverbank entered from underwater.
