It is worthy of special note that in a number of places thehospital has been the* direct providential outcome of thedeaconess movement, as the latter was the outcome of thetraining school originated by the Womans Home MissionarySociety- In visiting the sick poor of the cities these womenfound many who needed pure air, a clean bed and carefulnursing quite as much as medical attention. In this way quite a number of the hos-pitals of the Methodist Episcopal Church began. Such wasthe case at Omaha, Neb. The hospital was opened on May 28,1891, under the auspices of the deaconesses who comprised Philadelphia Hospital 1197 the staff of nurses. During the year 1900-01, 898 patientswere treated, nearly one third of them without charge. The Philadelphia Hospital was founded by the liberal be-quest of Dr Scott Stewart, who died on June 27, 1881. Thehospital was opened on April 22, 1892, for the treatmentof accidents, acute and subacute diseases, and curablechronic diseases. Its land embraces five acres.
